2) Don't Be Loyal To One Store - Although it can be convenient to stick to just one store, saving money on groceries means looking out for bargains no matter where they are. Buy papers to stock up on coupons and go where the deals are. Nowadays, you can even take advantage of price comparison websites to help compare the different stores, and see when special deals are ending.
3) Buy Generic Brands - Although buying high end brands may make a difference to the quality of some items, the chances are that a store's own brand is good enough for most things. Start trying out generic brands of items that you use regularly, and see if you can really notice a difference. If not, keep using these generic brands and you'll save a big chunk of cash every week.
4) Keep A Price Book - For the items you buy most regularly, keep a small notebook (or even an Excel spreadsheet) to write down the best prices you've found for groceries (plus the weight or number of items included in a pack). When you come across a new deal, you can get out your price book to help you calculate whether it really is a better deal than what you normally buy. Yes, it'll take time to put together at first, but with the knowledge at your fingertips you'll find that saving money on groceries gets a lot easier!
5) Don't Waste Food - Unfortunately, many of us waste a huge amount of money on food that gets thrown away in the trash. To help avoid waste there are a few things you can do. Firstly, check use by dates on anything you buy and really think about whether you can fit them into a meal before that date. Next, consider cooking up larger batches of meals and freezing portions for later. Thirdly, many foods can be stored in the refrigerator (even if they don't say they need to be) to keep them fresh past the use by date.
Yes, saving money on food using these tips will take some effort, but it's well worth it when you start to see the savings add up!
